"Running" dual fuel ship machine development Wärtsilä is unique

From November 12th to 13th, at the invitation of Wärtsilä Group, more than 20 media representatives from China, the United States, Britain, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Finland and other countries went to Wärtsilä Italy to participate in the Wärtsilä Group. Two-stroke dual-fuel engine technology conference. In the course of participating in the event, the reporter was touched by all kinds of insights, and also deeply understands that Wärtsilä is the key to maintaining a leading position in the field of traditional marine diesel engines and in the front-line dual fuel engines.

Strengthen technical advantage
In 2006, Wärtsilä introduced the dual fuel (DF) electrical concept for liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels for the first time. This has revolutionized the industry because dual-fuel technology enables ships to use evaporative gases to reduce the gas consumption of their propulsion systems, saving about 40 tons of gas per day compared to turbine propulsion systems. The efficiency of the engine is increased from around 25% to 40% over the entire output power range.
When introducing Wärtsilä products, Martin Wernli, vice president of two-stroke for Wärtsilä Ship Power, said that with the continuous exploitation of global oil and gas, everyone is more concerned about energy efficiency and environmental protection. With its highly competitive product and lead time, Lanland not only provides ship owners and operators with a full-life solution for ship power, but also provides a range of power integration solutions for shipyards. As the world's most complete supplier of marine and offshore products, Wärtsilä will develop various types of engines fueled by natural gas in the future, and this engine is undoubtedly more competitive in environmental protection, while Wärtsilä will strive to reduce it. The manufacturing cost of these products. He further said that Wärtsilä's two-stroke engine products are mainly divided into two series, namely X series, RTA and RT-flex series. X series machines are widely used in bulk carriers, oil tankers and container ships due to their high reliability, high efficiency and low operating cost. At the same time, Wärtsilä has provided more than 1,000 dual-fuel engines for all types of military vessels, offshore support vessels, LNG carriers, ferries, tugboats and land-based power plants under construction and delivery worldwide. In addition, during the continuous development of engine technology, Wärtsilä focuses on low-pressure gas engines in the two-stroke and four-stroke series. Although the group has more than 40 years of experience in high-pressure gas engine technology, it does not meet the stringent emission standards of the shipping industry without a post-processing system. In contrast, low-pressure gas engines can do this, and are simpler and can operate under any load conditions.
As a technical expert, Ingemar Nylund, director of two-stroke dual-fuel technology at Wärtsilä Ship Power, said the low-pressure engine technology allows the engine to operate with LNG, light fuel, and heavy fuel. It is even possible to seamlessly share and switch fuels during operation without losing power or speed. The Wärtsilä dual fuel engine is designed to use the same fuel to achieve the same power output. In addition, the Wärtsilä 50DF dual fuel engine is available in a variety of configurations, from 6-cylinder in-line series to 18-cylinder V-configuration series, with an output of 950/975 kW per cylinder and a total mechanical output of up to 17,100 kW. The technology is unique in that it introduces two separate fuel injection systems. When the engine needs to operate with gas, the electronically controlled common rail pilot injection system only injects a small amount of liquid fuel, which meets the requirements of specific environmental regulations, which cannot be met by conventional injection systems. When the engine needs to operate with a conventional fuel system, the dual fuel engine can use standard liquid marine fuel.
Talking about the challenges that such complex engine technology will pose to our ship design units and shipyards, Rolf Stiefel, the two-stroke sales director of Wärtsilä Ship Power, told reporters that it is not necessary at this point. There are concerns that Wärtsilä will provide a complete power design solution to dock with the shipyard. In fact, some shipping cases in China show that these efforts are progressing smoothly.

The market is fully rolled out
Today, Wärtsilä continues to dominate the market and has signed a contract to supply the Wärtsilä 50DF engine to 46 gas carriers built by Greek shipowners Maran Gas and Dynagas. Wärtsilä received an order at the beginning of this year to supply the entire system for a series of LNG vessels built by Danish gas transporter Evergas. These ships will be equipped with Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines, which in addition to transporting LNG, can also be loaded and reliquefied with ethane and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) using cargo handling kits supplied by Wärtsilä. Under the integrated system contract, a series of independent Wärtsilä solutions are combined into a fully optimized solution package. For example, the LNG supply system integrates a cargo handling system that can be used to cool cargo, thereby increasing the efficiency and environmental performance of the entire system.
In addition to its success in the LNG ship market, the Wärtsilä 50DF engine is gradually recognized by ship owners and ship operators. At present, Wärtsilä has received orders for more than 30 ships using LNG fuel. The new Viking cruise between Finland and Sweden is the world's largest gas-fueled ferry. The demand for Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines has also increased for ships serving the offshore oil and gas industry. One of Wärtsilä's latest offshore engineering support vessel support orders is to provide design and integration solutions for Siem Offshore's new large-scale drilling platform supply vessel (PSV), which will rely primarily on LNG operations.
In the Chinese market, this year, Wärtsilä signed two contracts to supply 50DF engines and propulsion systems to LNG ships, which were built at two shipyards in China. The first contract was signed with Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. and its trading partner Shanghai Nanche Hange Ship Engineering Co., Ltd.; another contract was signed with Dalian COSCO Shipyard Engineering Co., Ltd. The two owners are Zhejiang Yuanhe Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. and Dalian Intai Group. The powertrain of each ship consists of a Wärtsilä 50DF engine, an adjustable pitch propeller, a gearbox and associated systems.
